17th May 1957 - 13th May 2020

It is with a heavy and broken heart that I must announce that my Dad passed away on Wednesday 13th May at 9:45pm.

Mum and I were with him as he took his last breath to one of his favourite songs. He looked comfortable and free of any pain.

Dad kept fighting for an unfathomable 4 days after being admitted to hospital on Saturday; defying the beliefs and estimations of hospital staff. He was brave until the end, as we knew he would be.

We told him how proud we were of him, how much we loved him and how much we would miss him - but that now it was time for him to rest.

We want to give our thanks to staff at UHCW who were so kind and attentive and worked so hard to make Dad’s passing as easy and dignified as possible.

Thanks to you all for your kind messages of love and support. They mean to world to us in this unimaginable time.

Thanks must also go to those of you who were there to offer your love, friendship and support to Dad until the very end.

He was a man rich in family and friendship; and he loved unconditionally. He was the most kind, selfless, generous, brave and strongest person I have ever known. He was the best Dad that Alex and I could ever have wished for and was the most devoted husband. He worked tirelessly to give us everything our family could ever need and we cannot imagine a world without his presence.

Please raise a glass for him tonight, he wouldn’t want us to be sad, but that is only because he would be far too modest to realise how much joy he brought to so many lives.

So, instead, please celebrate a life that was full of love and laughter. Let's all do our best to be like Dad - as frankly the world would be a better place. He will live on with us all and we will never, ever, forget him.

God bless Dad, until we meet again.

With all my love,
Hayley xxx

Thoughts

Mick Leslie, great bloke, great fireman and I’d forgotten till I’d seen the photos what a great smile he had too, and that deep chuckle he had. Memories of the fire brigade, watch night out in Birmingham and Mick getting the last train back to Coventry only to wake up in Northampton. Mick the unofficial painter and decorator of the fire station, he’d go from room to room but oddly the TV room always got decorated the week of the cricket test match. Winning the breathing apparatus competition and Chalkie allowing all the watch to open the bar and Mick, pint in hand singing along to Tina Turner ‘simply the best’ and you were the best Mick. A quiet man that who led by example and any fireman that served with Mick knows this, a proper fireman’s fireman. Pat.

Forty-five years ago, I met Mick on the first night at Bangor. He was the one who understood what a round was and reciprocated in kind. The rest, as they say, is history. I will miss his visits and his dry, cutting wit. But mostly I loved the man himself and will miss him dearly. It has been an honour and a privilege to call him my friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with Chris, Alex, Hayley and Dave, and his sisters and wider family. John, Rosie and Girls.

Mick was one of the best. All ex-Bangor folk loved him and, as Gerry said, no-one ever had a bad word to say about him, which is a great tribute. We always had a good chat at Bangor reunions; he was fine company and a great listener. A great bloke and an exemplary team player; so many cherished memories, Our thoughts are with Chris, Hayley and Alex. Mick & Janet Hubbard
